Simulation Education Workshops

These blended learning workshops from the National League for Nursing and Laerdal Medical are focused on providing faculty development in simulation teaching and learning strategies when and where it’s needed most – at your location and your convenience. We bring a qualified staff of NLN Simulation Nurse Educators and industry specialists with an expertise for improving nursing education outcomes, and pair them with your team. The Simulation Education Workshops offer Continuing Education Units (CEs) using active learning strategies that immerse faculty in simulation pedagogy. Faculty will engage in learning opportunities that address simulation foundations, curriculum integration, debriefing, and evaluation in simulation.

Simulation Curriculum Integration Workshop

The Simulation Curriculum Integration Workshop is a blended learning course, which includes on-line modules from the NLN Simulation Innovation Resource Center (SIRC) followed by an on-site workshop facilitated by NLN Simulation Nurse Educators. This one-day workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to analyze their institution’s target program of study and/or course curriculum map to systematically integrate simulation teaching activities to appropriately align with program and course learning outcomes. Full-scale simulation scenarios, virtual simulations and evaluation will be systematically linked to the learning objectives for teaching, knowledge, skills and attitudes.

Objectives:

  • Establish key initiatives and goals for the simulation program
  • Establish learning objective for simulation that align with program curriculum outcomes
  • Identify evaluation mechanisms related to the learning objectives and simulation scenarios

Foundations in Simulation Workshop

The Foundations in Simulation Workshop is a blended learning course, which includes on-line modules from the NLN Simulation Innovation Resource Center (SIRC) followed by an on-site workshop. The Foundations in Simulation Pedagogy Workshop is designed to provide a solid theoretical basis for incorporating simulation into the curriculum. This highly interactive workshop conducted by NLN Simulation Nurse Educators, begins with a demonstration of a well run and expertly debriefed simulation, presents the evidence that supports the use of simulation, and immerses participants in a simulation so they can experience the challenges associated with implementing simulation and the power of experiential learning.

Objectives:

  • Discuss the components of a simulation-based learning experience
  • Discuss the learning theories that inform simulation pedagogy
  • Recognize elements of best practice in simulation design and facilitation

Debriefing Workshop

The Debriefing Workshop is a blended learning course, which includes on-line modules from the NLN Simulation Innovation Resource Center (SIRC) followed by an on-site workshop. The workshop is a one-day evidence-based overview of debriefing methods for healthcare simulation conducted by NLN Simulation Nurse Educators. Learners will work together in small groups and experience many short activities during the didactic portion of the course. The highly interactive nature of this course will require learners to collaborate and participate in skill building activities. Learning will focus on quality of debriefing that includes role-play.

Objectives:

  • Discuss the foundations of solid debriefing
  • Demonstrate debriefing techniques grounded in critical theory
  • Define ways to operationalize principles across the curriculum

Evaluation Workshop

The Evaluation Workshop is a blended learning course. Participants begin by completing an on-line module from the NLN Simulation Innovation Resource Center (SIRC) followed by an on-site workshop. This one day evidence-based, highly interactive workshop takes participants through all the elements of simulation evaluation, including simulations, facilitation, and learning outcomes. Interactive exercises will guide participants through an analysis of their current evaluation practices in order to develop an evaluation plan for the future.

Objectives:

  • Discuss current trends in simulation evaluation and research
  • Examine existing standards, guidelines, and tools for evaluating various components of a simulation program
  • Critique measures used for evaluating student achievement of learning outcomes
  • Develop a comprehensive simulation evaluation plan

CEU credit hours = 6.0
